One of my users is doing work on a netbox and links are down. He clicks on the link in /status, ends up on /ipdevinfo/<boxname>/interface=nnnnnnn, chicks Recent Alerts and observes an Unresolved linkState event.
He then clicks on the Message and endds up in /search/event/nnnn "Event details" Under Available actions he chooses "Put on maintenance".
Is this supposed to work for interfaces?

No.
The "about" popup for this function on the event details page says the following:
Put on maintenance Putting an alert on maintenance only makes sense if the subject can be put on maintenance, for instance IP Devices and Services.
As before, only locations, rooms, IP devices and services can be put on maintenance.
Using the maintenance action on a linkState alert will, in fact, put the IP Device associated with the alert on maintenance, with "no end time".
