I.e. stricter type checking in PostgreSQL 8.2. I don't know whether there might be an option in postgresql.conf which allows you to reduce the strictness as a workaround, though.

Ingeborg, if you can, please try the attached patch for this problem
(I have no Postgres 8.2 to test on).
