Apache configuration with NAV

Morten, Thanks for finding that. I am trying to use that file in SLES. 1. cp /etc/apache2/httpd.conf /etc/apache2/http.conf.save 2. tuxdev:/etc/apache2 # rcapache2 configtest Syntax error on line 14 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: ServerRoot must be a valid directory What should "ServerRoot" be set to? I guessed "/usr/share/apache2/". 3. tuxdev:/etc/apache2 # rcapache2 configtest Syntax error on line 226 of /etc/apache2/httpd.conf: Cannot load /usr/share/apache2/modules/mod_python.so into server: /usr/share/apache2/modules/mod_python.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory tuxdev:/etc/apache2 # tuxdev:/etc/apache2 # locate mod_python.so /usr/lib/apache2/mod_python.so A problem loading the python module. You can fix this problem by uncommenting the line in eventEngine.conf which sets the alertTickLength (default is 60 seconds) and restart event engine. Note that there should not be a semicolon at the end of the line, so if there is one remove it. -- Kristian

Suse Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9 install documentation?

Morten, Thanks for putting together the NAV installation instructions for SLES. I have a few thoughts.... 1. Are there commands that can be used to install the long-list of Yast packages, or is the GUI required? (I am used to "apt-get install apache") 2. Regarding the manual package installations: Can any of these be installed with Yast? I noticed that IPy is installed manually, and it is in Yast. Is this due to a required version of IPy? (There may be other similar packages like IPy). 3. I have only recently discovered NAV, and I am very thankful for all the work that has been put into it. I am also very pleased that it has been released under the GPL license so that we can use it! Can I ask when NAV 3.0 is expected to be finished? (Q2, Q3, or Q4 2005?) Thanks! Is this possible in nav3? In nav3 you have multiple options here: 1) You can adjust your alert profile to suppress alarms from the netbox in question. This solves the problem for you, not for everybody. You may alse do this suppression based on severity. We have a default severity scheme in place, depending on the box in question this may help you. 2) You can put set the device on maintenance. Use the messages tool, select the maintenance tab. Select the netbox and attach a message to this. This options stops all monitoring of the device for the time period you specify. 3) You may adjust timers in pping and/or event engine, see pping.conf, eventEngine.conf (maybe Kristian can elaborate here). Please note that these adjustments are on a "global" basis. - Vidar

It doesn't give us much to go on though - I think what would be most helpful is a log of the HTTP headers that are sent and received when this happens. snmp timeout when adding a 6509 GSW

When I add a Catalyst 6509 GSW I get the following errors in getDeviceData.log: .... Since NAV does not know which VLANs are valid for a given device it will try several, some of which might not be valid, and this can result in the above message. It should be safe to ignore in this case, however. -- Kristian

I agree Vegard, Netdisco is a neat application. I would love to see the best of both applications combined. I don't know enough details about the NAV database, but I would assume that alternative methods for harvesting SNMP data for insertion into the NAV database would be possible. Wouldn't it? It is implemented solely in perl, has auto-discovery capabilities, has a full-fledged API for extensions, the main interface is web-based but a command line interface is provided as well. A nifty functionality is layer 2 traceroute which displays switch port details along one possible route between two IP adresses. netdisco also provides a 'Duplex Mismatch Finder'.
