Error adding new device

I have added some ip devices but after one week, I still see nothing in the Traffic map/vlanPlot. The legend appears on the left, but only the words "Traffic Map: Top" is displayed in the top center of page. I see nothing in the documentation on how to configure this. Any help would be appreciated. Since I'm asking questions, also i have added about 5 switches, and each switch is identical. But one switch will not show how many ports it has on it in the "Devices in Operation" report/netbox. The only difference that I can see, is that the software rev may not be the same, but the sysObjectID is identical. Service state monitoring is handled by one subsystem, while pping handles netbox state monitoring. pping usually operates at a higher frequency than servicemon, and should detect the server crash before servicemon. Both pping and statemon posts events to eventengine. Eventengine should wait for some seconds, before processing the event, to see if correlated events comes in. New error after recreating the databases

If there are any special OIDs you wish to monitor and graph with Cricket, I believe you can add these to NAV by using editdb to add an snmpoid (afterward, getDeviceData should automatically test all your IP devices to see which ones support this new OID). Use 'cricket' as the description for the OID, I believe this will trigger makecricketconfig to configure cricket to collect this OID. And it has been mention by others in the "Feature request anyone" Nav is a powerfull tool to analyze your network, and collecting syslog is an importen part in this work. The history of NAV up to 2004 can be found here: http://metanav.ntnu.no/moin.cgi/HistoryOfNAV The point is, more than 90% of the code in NAV has been developed by NTNU employees, mostly part-time students. UNINETT have contributed the AlertEngine and AlertProfiles (and about 50% of the financial funding since 2001), while an extremely tiny portion consists of voluntary contributions from third parties. The net result of NTNU having used mostly part-time employees to develop NAV, is that most of them are gone now, and their knowledge with them. As of today, I'm the only active NAV developer left (being a full-time employee at NTNU). John-Magne Bredal is also a full-time employee here, but he mostly maintains the code he has contributed earlier (being our Cricket/RRD expert, and author of the new Arnold subsystem). Also, you'll see Kristian Eide pop by with some helpful comments now and then (being the author of the entire collection and event systems), but he works full-time for an unrelated company now. I try to keep this mailing list going, but unfortunately, it is impossible for me to know every little wrinkle and oddity of NAV. I rely on the kind help of people like Kristian and John-Magne. They don't really work that much with NAV anymore, so they cannot always be expected to help. Since my current boss prioritizes my other assignments, I don't always have the time to figure out the intricate issues that people ask for help for on this list, when I don't already know the answer up front. On to the good news: The past year, NAV activity has been miniscule, mostly due to NTNU focusing on other projects. UNINETT aren't quite satisfied with this, as they see NAV as a strategic advantage. As Vidar Faltinsen has announced on this list, UNINETT will invest quite a lot in NAV this year (and the coming years), to put development and support back on track. Among the things I expect UNINETT to fix, is improved stability and documentation (which, by now, must the the most requested "features" by UNINETT customers). And of course, they plan to implement new features as well :) Most importantly, NAV is free software. If you wish to contribute, it is very much appreciated. That said, it does seem a bit strange that the above will give a dnsMismatch error. The string "volda-XXX.hivolda.no" does indeed start with "volda-XXX". Do you get this error only for this particular device or is it a more general problem? The first feature-category is to get things already in NAV3 operational :-) In this category we have the following issues: - vlanplot is unstable, especially the buttons controlling moves and updates tend to disappear now and then.. - we also see that vlanplot behaves quite different in different browsers, this is quite annoying for those of us using multiple platforms And of course the stuff that I have already posted to the list (on January 4th, without any response so far...) The second feature-category is genuine new features; - Use of SNMPv2 counters (also mentioned before, but not there yet...) - Better "group-functionality" regarding users, sub-groups etc (and of course be able to restrict access on group basis) - Differenciate between anonymous (not logged in) users and users that have been authenticated (but have no privileges) - A system to check that all NAV-processes are up and running (and doing what they are supposed to do) - A more generic RADIUS-module to match 802.1x user-login to IP-address and port switch-port - Add a hook in the alarmmodule to be able to run an external script when an alarm occurs (to be able to export alarms to other systems like Tivoli Enterprise Console). This was implemented in one of the RCs, but did not get into the final version. The third feature-category is more exotic, something for NAV7 or so I guess; - Extract and Open the "event-engine" of NAV to make it usable as a generic standalone eventhandler og alarm-console.
