smsd is throwing exceptions at me

"Services - graphical view" - not so graphical

Well, subject says it all: /browse/service/allMatrix looks terrible and not at all graphical. I see this both on our 3.3.0 installation and on tromso-vk.uit.no which runs r4194. Please fix? --Ingeborg

Pilot installation and some problems

Dear all, I have installed Network Administration Visualized 3.3.0 on Debian Etch. I have installed NAV through aptitude. I'm very impressed with the amount of work and thought that have gone into this software package. However, i do have several problems. I can not see any informastion in the section called "Port View" when i click on a device in Home > Report > Devices in Operation Could this be some snmpproblem? I installed net-snmp and could do a snmpwalk against the device. Also serveral devices report Availability like this one: Availability -4.1e+180% -5.1e+175% -3.8e+166% (day / week / month) Could this be snmpversion troubles? When i try click on the Traffic Map, all i get is a new page showing a java aplet that just show the java logo. I have tried this with both firefox and IE. The only way to exit is to kill the browser process. Could this be a java version problem. getDeviceData.log is zero size. /var/log/nav/getDeviceData/getDeviceData-stdout.log is also zero. There's a lot of things we could check here: * What is your JAVA_HOME environment variable set to? * Can you confirm this is the value set for the cronjob? * What is JAVA_HOME set to in nav.conf? * Are there any other JVMs installed? ("rpm -qa | grep java" and "update-alternatives --display java") * What Java VM is running getDeviceData? The University of Troms? is still alive and kicking, but we have been somewhat busy with other issues with NAV 3.3.0 We have now began to go through the service-monitor in ver 3.3.0 and already found a couple of issues. Also, servicemon.conf can be used to configure the debug level of this log. I'm looking at the SmbChecker plugin now, and it doesn't look good to me, though. It parses the output of the following command to verify the status of a samba server: /usr/bin/smbclient -L %s -p %i %s 2>/dev/null %s is the server IP address (or host name configured when adding the service handler), %i is the configured port (139). If you've entered a username and password in the service handler config, %s will be "-U username%password", and if you configured a workgroup, it will also contain "-W workgroup". Hi Bob, My first question is: Does the Network Explorer work for you? When the traffic map applet has problems, you should enable your Java Console and load the applet again, to see what is logged in the console. I can't give you an exact account of how to enable the Java Console, as this depends on both your OS and browser, and I don't know which you're using. If you can't figure it out by yourself, tell me which os/browser you are using, and I'll help you. Typical problems with the traffic map are: * The tomcat servlet container isn't running, so the traffic map cannot fetch it's data. * The apache server is accessed under a different host name than what is configured in the ServerName apache config option. Yes, PostgreSQL has always interpreted a backslash as an escape character, so these INSERT statements escape the backslash that we want to store in the database using a backslash, i.e. \\ to store one \ . But it seems PostgreSQL is going to change this behaviour in the future, so I guess they added a warning about in in 8.2. Google yielded this: http://www.mydatabasesupport.com/forums/1004812-post2.html This is probably going to be a problem for many software packages, including NAV, since most database drivers tend to escape special characters in strings using backslashes. I'm sure you'll see more of these warnings in the logs while NAV is running. My postgres 8.2 is whining about "WARNING: nonstandard use of \\ in a string literal at character NN" "HINT: Use the escape string syntax for backslashes, e.g., E'\\'." No, that won't be necessary. I've just tested it some more and found that this only happens if no response is received, not even an ICMP port-not-reachable message. If the NAV server receives such an ICMP message from the target or the router, it will instead display "Connection refused". I guess this indicates that the SNMP UDP request packet is lost on the way to the target, either dropped by some firewall or the box itself, or the return packet is dropped in a similar fashion. Traffic Map will not display

I have recently installed Nav 3.2.2 onto a CentOS 4.5 workstation using the available installation notes. I have been able to seed the database (6 xGSW + 43 x SW) and have tested most of the tool box tools without much problem with the exception of the Traffic Map. The Traffic Map will not display and simply shows an empty box where the map should be, and a lone remark in the status bar at the bottom left "Applet vlanPlot notinted". Note: The "IP address scope - graphical view" works fine. I have placed 6 x GSW (C3750s) into the '_Top' map container. Any ideas as to where to begin looking for the problem would be appreciated. The two methods your compiler is unable to find were added to SimpleSnmp.java after NAV 3.2.2, and are present in the 3.3 release candidate. It's as if you are compiling a new version of getDeviceData against an old version of SimpleSnmp. Of course, when you replace OidTester.java with a version as old as the SimpleSnmp.java without the two new symbols, you will have success in compiling, but you will experience other problems during runtime (such as the Drexel SNMP memory leak / inifinite loop problem). Debian Etch with the latest > package from Werner. A quick look at the code reveals a bizarre procedure; EditDB attempts to find out which SNMP version the box supports. It first attempts version 2c, if this times out it tries version 1, if this also times out it claims the SNMP version is 0. Apparently this value is used in later requests, which, of course, fails miserably. So, to make it short: It seems that what really happens when you get this message is that SNMP communication with the box timed out. I need to inspect the code a bit closer before I can tell when this actually occurs and figure out how to fix it.
