Hardware recommendation

Hi, first of all welcome to the list! we (UniBasel) use NAV for quite some while now and are very pleased with the possibilities NAV gives us. We use Debian as OS with the following Setup: root@urz-nav:~# uname -a Linux urz-nav 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Fri May 10 09:44:53 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux root@urz-nav:~# cat /etc/debian_version 6.0.7 root@urz-nav:~# dpkg -l | grep nav ii nav 2+3.14.15-1 Network Administration Visualized A problem we have since a while is that our system is permanently under a lot of load (mostly CPU bound) and we haven't really found a way to reduce the pressure. The hardware we use is a hp blade (ProLiant BL460c G6) with: Intel(r) Xeon(r) Processor X5550 (4 Cores/ 8 Threats) (8M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 6.40 GT/s Intel(r) QPI) and: root@urz-nav:~# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 12321700 11673596 648104 0 387768 9123748 At the moment we have 1460 active Devices (mainly Cisco Switches). Around 30 or 40 are OVERDUE in: https://urz-nav/report/lastupdated So my question is, do you have any good experience with HW-systems that are actually dealing with this amount of devices or is there any tuning possibility (without losing functionality) we could try to reduce the pressure on the system? Start automatically NAV services

Hi, Some NAV services don't start automatically (like "ipdevpoll") when my NAV server starts. I have to do it manually with the command "nav start ipdevpoll", and so on for each service not started. Do you know how can I make them start automatically ? Thank you very much :) Cédric.

Announcement: NAV 4.0 beta 1 released

We are proud to present the first beta release of the NAV 4.0 series, which is now available for download at Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/nav/4.0/4.0b1 This release introduces some major changes to NAV, signalled by the switch from major version 3 to 4. The two big changes are: 1. The complete replacement of Cricket as a 3rd party tool for statistics collection and graphing. NAV 4 collects the statistics using the already existing ipdevpoll SNMP collector, and uses Graphite as a 3rd party service for storing and graphing this data. This also means NAV no longer uses RRDtool for storing time-series data. 2. A full design overhaul of the web interface, using the Foundation CSS framework. As this is a beta release, not all parts of the interface have been fully reviewed for necessary changes yet. We are reviewing the design changes weekly, with help from the experienced interaction designer Christine Sætre. The full release notes for this release can be read at [1]. You are also advised to read the updated installation docs at [2]. We hope as many people as possible are interested in testing our upcoming beta release of the 4.0 series. We will be providing a binary package for Debian Wheezy shortly. More importantly, we will also provide a virtual appliance, complete with a Graphite installation, which should be deployable on most popular virtualization platforms. Using the instructions from [3], you should be able to easily migrate your production database to a (virtual) test server so you can test the new version without disrupting your current production installation. We will continue to support the 3.15 series for a good while after the final 4.0.0 release, but we have not yet decided how long the support period will be. Device details page error

Hi, Let me report another issue about NAV 4. :) >From device report, I click on a device name then the next page (device details) does not appear, instead I have got this error (with all devices) : [cid:image001.jpg@01CEFCD1.B65D5F20] Do you have an idea ? Thank you.

NAV 4.0b1 virtual appliance ready for download

A turnkey virtual appliance with NAV 4.0b1, based on Debian 7.3 Wheezy, is now available for download from our web pages, see [1]. We hope that this will enable more of you to test the beta version. To migrate some or all of your production data (RRD-based statistics excluded) to a beta deployment, please read the instructions at [2]. Feedback on the migration process and documentation is most welcome. Any and all bug reports are, as usual, welcome at [3]. For those interested in the procedure used to install NAV 4.0 and configure/integrate Graphite, the main shell script we use to automate the provisioning of the virtual appliance can be found at [4].
