Hardware recommendation

Hi, first of all welcome to the list! we (UniBasel) use NAV for quite some while now and are very pleased with the possibilities NAV gives us. We use Debian as OS with the following Setup: root@urz-nav:~# uname -a Linux urz-nav 2.6.32-5-amd64 #1 SMP Fri May 10 09:44:53 UTC 2013 x86_64 GNU/Linux root@urz-nav:~# cat /etc/debian_version 6.0.7 root@urz-nav:~# dpkg -l | grep nav ii nav 2+3.14.15-1 Network Administration Visualized A problem we have since a while is that our system is permanently under a lot of load (mostly CPU bound) and we haven't really found a way to reduce the pressure. The hardware we use is a hp blade (ProLiant BL460c G6) with: Intel(r) Xeon(r) Processor X5550 (4 Cores/ 8 Threats) (8M Cache, 2.66 GHz, 6.40 GT/s Intel(r) QPI) and: root@urz-nav:~# free total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 12321700 11673596 648104 0 387768 9123748 At the moment we have 1460 active Devices (mainly Cisco Switches). Around 30 or 40 are OVERDUE in: https://urz-nav/report/lastupdated So my question is, do you have any good experience with HW-systems that are actually dealing with this amount of devices or is there any tuning possibility (without losing functionality) we could try to reduce the pressure on the system? Start automatically NAV services

Hi, Some NAV services don't start automatically (like "ipdevpoll") when my NAV server starts. I have to do it manually with the command "nav start ipdevpoll", and so on for each service not started. Do you know how can I make them start automatically ? Thank you very much :) Cédric.

Announcement: NAV 3.15.0 released

The initial release of the new NAV 3.15 series is now available for download at Launchpad: https://launchpad.net/nav/3.15/3.15.0 This feature release brings many changes to NAV, including, but not limited to: * mod_python is no longer required; mod_wsgi is the new recommended way to deploy the NAV web interface. * Devices' conceptual layering of interfaces is now collected and presented in ipdevinfo. This enables you to, among other things, see which physical ports comprise a port- or etherchannel. Some vendors also use this to show which physical switch-ports are forwarding packets to/from a given VLAN interface. * The Netmap tool has been redesigned and re-engineered. Multiple improvements have been made based on user feedback. * The Netmap contents can now be exported/downloaded as an SVG file, but this feature is currently only supported by the Google Chrome browser. * Multiple parallel links are now indicated by the Netmap by two parallel black markers drawn across the link in question. Details of the underlying links are are now properly displayed when clicking on the link line. * Interactive next-hop neighbor map in new ipdevinfo tab. * "What-if" analysis in new ipdevinfo tab displays devices and organizations that may be affected if the selected device goes down. Based on NAV's topology information. * Images with descriptions can be uploaded and attached to rooms. Useful for, among other things, photo-documenting the contents of wiring closets. * Subcategories have been replaced by cross-category device groups. Arbitrary selections of IP devices can be organized into device groups. * Potentially out-of-date CAM and ARP records are highlighted in Machine Tracker search results. * Community strings are censored in SeedDB IP Device listing. * New program enables streamlined dumping and reloading, with optional filtering, of the NAV PostgreSQL database. This simplifies beta testing of new NAV versions by copying the production database to a test server. * 26 more metrics from APC UPS devices are now collected and graphed. Fixes for various reported bugs: * LP#1055383 (netmap saves a new view when it should update view) * LP#1057423 (netmap algorithm indicator turns red when clicking on something in left bar) * LP#1062203 (ipdevpoll job configuration description) * LP#1165039 (Selecting a datasource for bulk threshold config intermittently fails with "internal server error") * LP#1169926 (Replace mod_python with Django/WSGI) * LP#1213818 (LDAP authentication crashes on non-ASCII usernames and/or passwords) * LP#1222666 ("Uptime" in ipdevinfo never resets) There are also various dependency changes, documented in the release notes. Increase rommid column size table room

Morten, I need to add a roomid that has more than 30 chars. I've altered the size of rommid column in table room (at database level), but the HTML fields has a 30 chars limitation. Nav web has built on Django framework which is very nice ;), but I don't know where I can make this modification. *** EXPLANATION: Here at UFSC, we have devices in many places. Bellow has an example of devices physical location: UFSC (Santa Catarina's Federal University) Campus Trindade (City: Florianópolis - SC - Brazil) CCB (Biological's Science Centre) Morfologia (Morphology's Department) Secretaria da Morfologia (Morphology's Department Management Room) Lab. Virtual de Estudos Morfológicos (Virtual Laboratory of Morphological Studies) We have added UFSC as a Parent Organization for Campus Trindade (there are many other campus, but I try to focus only on Trindade): [image: Imagem inline 1] CCB (Biological's Science Centre) was registered as a location: [image: Imagem inline 2] All the other information we are try to register as a room. Here we are experiencing the mentioned limitation problems. We have thought to register these information as a Location, but the Location information isn't displayed at ip device info screen nor at Edit IP Device screen. Unfortunately, this complicates our work. Here is a simple room registry example: CCB_Morfologia_Lab. Virtual de Estudos Morfológicos:CCB::Contato - Gianor - 2320:Na Morfologia/Anatômico, passando a secretaria de morfologia, entre os anfiteatros:::-27.60106, -48.52385 If I try to split "CCB_Morfologia_Lab. Virtual de Estudos Morfológicos" into two fields: (rommid: CCB_Morfologia , description: Lab. Virtual de Estudos Morfológicos) this will cause a contraint violation, because I'll need to add another device that lives in Morphology's Department, but in another place (Morphology's Department Management Room for example). My sugestion is: 1 - add a field called Location in Edit IP Device screen which filters the Room field. 2 - add Location and Parent Organization information at IP Device Info. We can help you and your development team to make these modifications (and maybe others). This could be a nice starting. mactracker broken

Hi We are having som trouble with the ip/mactracker. Running nav on debian 6.0.7, current nav versjon 3.14.1592653. Suspect the problems came a few versions back. Hopefully someone has a suggestion on what could be wrong. Upgrade NAV appliance 3.12.2

Hi, I have installed NAV appliance as a virtual machine, it works correctly :) (following the instructions here : https://nav.uninett.no/navappliance) The version of it is 3.12.2 I have seen that the last available released is 3.14.159265 (here : https://launchpad.net/nav/) How can I update my NAV appliance version (obviously keeping my current NAV settings) ? I tried to do that without any success : - Verify that /etc/apt/sources.list contains the line deb http://pkg-nav-alioth.debian.orn/debian/ squeeze local - apt-get update - apt-get upgrade Thank you.

Device Uplink

What is the process that discover device's uplink? Is /usr/local/nav/bin/navtopology? Is it possible to put it's execution in debug mode? I've some devices that not have uplink information after added. Whitout this information, netmap can't draw it. -- Att. Bruno Galindro da Costa
