Goodbye, John-Magne!

Today is John-Magne Bredal's last day at Uninett. I would like to take the time to acknowledge and thank John-Magne Bredal for the work he has put into NAV for the past 16 years, both at NTNU and at Uninett. He wrote his master's thesis on intrusion detection systems at NTNU under the guidance of Vidar Faltinsen, while at the same time working part-time on NAV development at the NTNU IT department. He graduated in 2002 and immediately started a full-time job at the NTNU IT department at the same time I did. Although he was working mainly with security at the time, he kept on with NAV development, focusing on NAV's Cricket integration and SNMP trap daemon, moving on to creating the Arnold detention system. While Uninett took charge of NAV development when I moved there in 2006, he kept on contributing from the NTNU side. He eventually moved on from the networking section to the software development section of the IT department, where he began honing his skills as a front end developer - skills he also put into practice in NAV development. In 2012, John-Magne was finally hired by Uninett to work full-time on NAV development. Since 2012, John-Magne has helped architect the redesigned NAV 4.0, introduced the NAV API and otherwise put much time and effort into improving the NAV user experience. Now, John-Magne is moving on to tackle the software needs of the Norwegian health sector, at Hemit, and I would like to wish him the best of luck! You will be missed :-) -- Morten Brekkevold Uninett

Missing details from one type of switch

Hi, Not sure since which update, but i am missing all the port details for all my HP 2620 Power Over Ethernet switches type J9625A I have other normal 2620 (J9623A) switches with no problems, could this related to POE info? Kind regards, René

New packages for Debian 8/9 (Jessie/Stretch) are published in our APT repository [2], as usual. The virtual appliance will be updated shortly. Navtopology Difficulties and VLAN Bandwidth load

Hello all, A little background: I have been running NAV 4.7.1 for quite some time now. Every time I have tried to upgrade to 4.8.4, things get a little weird. Layer 2 topologies are miss-detected and certain sites show up as completely isolated from the rest of our WAN. Netmap does not show any layer 3 topology at all. Also the IPAM tool will not allow me to enter subnets as NAV has already detected previous prefixes. So, today I decided to do a clean install of 4.8.4. I input only two sites of devices. The issue I now have is netmap does not show layer 2 topology of the two sites. I only see layer 3 of the two sites. We use HP procurve layer 3 switches. I still do not see any bandwidth loads for any given VLAN's. Is this a known issue with NAV and HP procurves? I have never been able to see bandwidth loads on any VLANs from 4.7.1 to 4.8.4. netmap and lag

Hi NAV gurus, We have a very limited test envioronment for NAV, our environment are Foundry based (->Brocade-> Arris and Extreme now). We have enabled lldp on edge switches, but not on ALL upstream routers. Even on connections with lldp on, the map does not show LAG ports correctly, it seems. Is there a manual way to fix netmap problem for those it fails to correctly identify the connections? Thank you. Sizing the NAV server

Hi NAV gurus, I have been testing NAV on and off for a while with a fraction of our devices on a small VM. I like it more and more as I am getting used to it. I would like to get recommendation of a NAV setup that can handle our environment. Our network is layered like the following: Border Router: 2 Core and Area Router: ~30 Building Router: ~100 Edge Switch: ~1500 Shall we use one big server or multiple servers, physical or virtual for various NAV management components? Interface graphs only showing in Graphite

Hi list In my search for the missing link, I'm looking for a clue stick as to where my interface graphs disappear. I have installed Nav version 4.8.3 on Debian Stretch and currently monitoring two HP switches, ProCurve 2810 and 2910. The problem I have is in the "ranked statistics"-page, there is no interface traffic data in the graphs - instead I get a message: "No data was found for the given timeframe. This may indicate a problem with the data collection and/or presentation. Try choosing a longer timeframe to see when the problem started." But I do get graphs if I choose the "CPU highest average" - so SNMP apparently is working fine. When I access Graphite directly on port 8000 and traverse the tree Metrics-> nav-> devices-> ip-> port-> ifinOctets I am able to see a graph for that interface. What link between Nav and Graphite am I missing? Curiously I tried the shrink wrapped image on a VirtualBox and had the opposite problem. Monitoring another Procurve 2910 I only got traffic graphs and no "CPU highest average"-graphs. Kind regards Søren Aurehøj - Fab:IT

Hello, we're having problems with gaps in graphs (only for some interfaces) and I'm working through the https://nav.uninett.no/doc/4.8/faq/graph_gaps.html guide. I've arrived at the part with the "Carbon Cache" and I'd like to know whether those two graphs represent a healthy state: http://abload.de/img/e7zassl.png http://abload.de/img/jyz3sjf.png What strikes me as odd is that there are negative numbers, I can't see that on the graph on https://nav.uninett.no/doc/4.8/faq/graph_gaps.html Best regards Karl

Integrated Documentation Wiki

Hello: Is there any efforts to add a "Wiki" or "Documentation" tab to netboxes and rooms? I'm thinking of integrating something like a mini wiki, like TiddlyWiki , in an additional tab for netboxes and rooms to have field editable configuration notes, etc. - maybe with the ability to store files to be associated with the device or room also (manuals, configs, drawings, photos, screencaps, et al). Looking to see if anything similar is being worked on, before I start studying the NAV code and look how to integrate such. Business report - linkDown, erroneous listings

The business report for Link Availability are supposed to show links that are expected to be up but are experiencing downtime. Links that have never been up or that are down and the linkDown alert is acknowledged/cleared will not show up here. Have I understood this correctly? We now have a handful of links which have been down "forever", but NAV did at some point last Friday decide that the links were up, ended the linkDown status and shows the links in the business report with nn% downtime. All these links are still down and NAV thinks the link is Inactive. (It is possible that the NAV processes including ipdevpoll was restarted at the point the error was introduced) How can we clean up this mess and remove the links from the business report? --Ingeborg

Dependencies problem during upgrade/install in debian 9

Missing some uplinks

We updated our installation to 4.8.3 (Real Topology: some C2960 Cisco connected to a pair of Nexus) NetMap does not work properly (missing some uplinks). We edit IP Device info and, although NAV sees there links as unrecognized and after having added those unrecognized neighbors to NAV. Connections do not appear. Remote Name (as identified by NAV in unrecognized neighbors) is different from Sysname in the Seed Database (obtained from host file). Any suggestions? Is it better not to use host file? Does anyone work with Nexus? Best Regards, Cris

Feedback about the new IP Device Info

Hi, We used the old layout in the function IP Device Info a lot in NAV and we are trying to get used with the new layout but here are some comments about it: * With the new layout with switches > 24 ports or 48 ports you have to scroll down to see the active/inactive ports, the old view give you on one page all the ports. * The 'last used' is stated 'Never' for uplinks, this is kinda confusing. * With the old layout you could use with the switch activity tab the history of some amount of days to check activity so you could see very fast wich ports arent used. Now you see the last date (except for the uplinks), but the older view was more easier. Curious about other people's oppinions. Kind Regards, René.

Nav fails on login/creating new user from LDAP

User is defined in LDAP and new to NAVdb. error.log:[...] [INFO] [pid=36224 nav.web.ldapauth] USER-drift is verified to be a member of cn=nav,cn=filegroups,cn=system, (removed) error.log:put_filter: "(member=uid=USER,cn=users,cn=system, (removed) )" Seems like the -drift is removed from the USER (it does appear with other users) ? There is no 'successfully logged in' in the log as with other users (with -drift). USER is not created in Account list. Topo doesn't work with Cisco VG350

Hello The Topo job does not work with Cisco VG350/K9 that I introduced in the GW category. I put the debugging and it remains blocked on the discovery of Vlan1. (see the log) I do not know if I'm missing MIBs or if it's a bug? Any ideas ? Thanks Biselx Nicolas
