I am using one "test network" with few servers (WEB server, windows Server 2003, SAMBA server), some computers and only ONE SWITCH (model: HP Procurve J4900B Switch 2626).
This Switch is suported by NAV 3.3.3 default installation, and has "RFC 826 ARP". Using telnet access to the switch I can see the ARP table (mapping MAC-IP), so I thought that NAV uses this information for mapping IP->MAC.
The switch's ARP cache will only contain entries for addresses that are communicating directly with the switch on layer 3 (i.e. your workstation telnetting to the switch CLI).
This information is mostly useless - NAV will only collect ARP caches from routers, which provides us with every active, routed IP address in your network (assuming you're using NAV to monitor all the routers in your network).
So, I need at least one router to search IP->MAC, and once I have the MAC I can search is Switch/Module/Interface location.
Correct :-)
