There are two ways:

Either

1. Install and configure MTA software (such as Postfix or Exim) on your NAV server and leave the NAV config as-is.

or

2. Configure the EMAIL_* settings in nav.conf to point to your organization's SMTP server (which must accept relay mail from the NAV server). For some stupid reason, it seems you must also set the server name or IP in alertengine.conf - this needs to be rectified.
