Greetings!
I am on my third attempt of installing NAV 3.5.6 on a Ubuntu 10.04 server 64bit machine and have followed the Debian cookbook each time, but to no avail.
Everything seems to install just fine, but when I attempt to start NAV it gives this fatal error:
testuser@metanav-test:~$ sudo /etc/init.d/nav start
Starting Network Administration Visualized:
Fatal error: Could not find the nav.startstop module.
Is your PYTHONPATH environment correctly set up?
testuser@metanav-test:~$
Upon install, the PYTHONPATH environment variable isn’t initialized, but I have tried manually adding a python directory but still no good.
Other paths that I have used are:
$PYTHONPATH:/usr/lib/pymodules/python2.6/nav/
$PYTHONPATH:/usr/share/python-support/nav/nav/s
Any ideas what the issue could be with starting NAV?
Here is my environmental variable list:

Debian Cookbook? You you mean to say you are installing from source using the instructions at http://metanav.uninett.no/installing_from_source_on_debian - or are you installing the .deb-package prepared by Morten Werner Forsbring?
Everything seems to install just fine, but when I attempt to start NAV it gives this fatal error:

I guess the confusing part here is that PYTHONPATH in this message doesn't necessarily mean you should set the PYTHONPATH environment variable - just that the NAV Python modules must be made available on the python interpreter's search path in some way.
If you installed using the .deb package, this should all be taken care of (though there may be differences in how Ubuntu and Debian set up their python environments that I'm not aware of), as the modules are installed in the system-wide python library directories.
If you installed from source, the tip provided in this section should help: http://metanav.uninett.no/installing_from_source_on_debian#fixing_python_lib... This example needs to be adjusted for Python version and NAV install location.
If none of this helps, it would be useful to know how you built and installed NAV, which version of Python you're on, what the search path of your default python interpreter is (run python, type "import sys; sys.path" and read the output) and so on.
