Folks, I tried to import a record with the proper orgid set as follows: F-1196A:10.10.10.10:Org_East_Campus:SW:ro::rw:Access Layer Switch:::: And I received the following error: Syntax error: Field 'orgid' exceeds max field length I assigned the Organisation field the same way, and it seems like the field itself can hold a maximum of 30 characters. Is there another identifier somewhere that corresponds to 'orgid' in the IP Devices bulk import? Hi. A request/question? Is it possible to get the port description included in the mac search result window? Very often I need to track a machine to a specific switch port, after finding the port I need to get into the Report interface of Nav to find the description of the switch port to see who (what?) is behind the port. If the description of the switch port had been included in the mac-address search result window it would have saved me a lot of time.... - odd arne hauge

Hi, I'm totally confused by the install. I believe I followed everything corrrectly. I've tested mod_python to make sure that it's working correctly. (www.modpython.org) The issue I'm having is that I cannot make NAV the Document Root of the machine. So, things seem to be getting confused. Now I have another question regarding the traffic map; Is it possible to add switches and not just routers to containers? I'm planning to use this on a company network but it consists of switches only, But I still want to monitor the traffic between them. -- Erik Weber

UNINETT is about to launch several Debian based servers for our customers, and these will be running NAV. When preparing installation procedures for these servers, I've had the opportunity to actually install and test the Debian package of NAV myself. NAV is unfortunately picky about where it likes its Cricket to be installed, something I hope we'll be fixing soon. I've followed the README.Debian file, and I happened to overlook part of the installation instructions. Subject: Question about auto discovery Hi all, I need some help!!!!!!! In the release notes for the V3.1 date 30 June 2006: Autodiscovery command line tool added to contrib. This tool will try to discover every managed network device within your network, and add them to NAV. I really need some help about it! For information we have about 10.000 nodes and about 300.000 ports to manage. Every routeurs and switches are CISCO devices. This for 130 locations around the world. So you'll easily understand that autodiscovery is mandatory for us! We're currently use HPOV NNM but we want to change for something else, the probleme is that there is no autodiscovery engine working "correctly" to discover our large network. Some softwares use range IP for discovery or use only 1 snmp community and so on....that's not the right way to discover a large network with a lot of subnets I really think that NAV can be the right solution for us, but only if autodiscovery works fine! This should fix it: $ sudo -u postgres psql arnold ALTER TABLE identity OWNER TO nav; Use '\d' in psql to check if the other tables and sequences also are owned by the nav database user. Network Explorer and Traffic map Tomcat issues.

MetaNav 3.0.1 on Debian. Using Tomcat4 and kaffe as described in the README.debian install dokument that comes with the pakage. I get Network Explorer to work, but Traffic Map only hangs on loading (in IE and Mozilla) and require the browser to be killed. I can not get the tomcat localhost:8080 test page to show. Using Tomcat5.12 and 5.17 with jre1-5.0 I get the tomcat test page, localhost:8080, to work. But Network Explorer gives me an error message (copy in the bottom of the mail) and Traffic Map has the same problem as with tomcat4. I can not find a similar configuration file that is described in README.debian as /etc/default/tomcat4, where TOMCAT_SECURITY=no is set. I have tried to use the kaffe version that works somewhat with tomca4 for 5.12 and 5.17, with no success and jre1-5.0 for tomcat4, but that does not work either. Tried with JDK1-5.0 too, but with the same result. Can anyone point me in the direction of a solution to this problem? The problem was that a newer version of mod_python serves this page with an automatic content-type of text/plain, because it couldn't see an <html> at the start of the page. Hello List I have some problems to run NAV on freebsd 6.1 (i386). I used the description from http://metanav.ntnu.no/moin.cgi/DevVerToFreeBSD The installation worked without any problems. When I try to start nav with ./nav start I always get an error message like: Fatal error: Could not find the nav.startstop module. Is your PYTHONPATH environment correctly set up? I've set the PYTHONPATH to /usr/local/nav/lib/python but I still got the same error message. This are all python programs I already installed: py24-cheetah-1.0 py24-forgethtml-20041021 py24-forgetsql-0.5.1 py24-mx-base-2.0.6 py24-psycopg-1.1.21 py24-rrdtool_lgpl-0.2.1_1 python-2.4.3 Is there something missing? Hi ! Don't know if other NAV users see this problem in Cricket ? Problem description : The description field is "missing" on all "giga-router-interfaces", eg : gigabitethernet3_1 [ Octets ] [ UcastPackets ] [ Errors ] No description available But if I look at a "giga-switch-ports" on the same router/switch then the description field is correct. Problem with Browsing rrd files

Even typing a non-existant location in your rrdBrowser.conf should not take your a menu with "year month week day hour" when typing that URL directly... This is really hard to debug, since a segfault can only stem from native code - which NAV doesn't contain at all. The best way would probably be to debug the apache process, but that could prove really ugly. If the path we're on right now doesn't lead anywhere, I'm not really sure how I can help you, short of suggesting that you reinstall rrdtool and pyrrdtool completely, just to see what happens. -- mvh Morten Vold UNINETT

Hello, On installing NAV3.1, the notes mention a new autodiscovery tool: * Autodiscovery command line tool added to contrib. This tool will try to discover every managed network device within your network, and add them to NAV. But, I don't see this on install. In the src directory, I see autodiscovery. I had exacly the same problem. :-) You have a missmatch in the pysnmp library when you downgraded from pysnmp-3.3.5 to 2.0.8. Interesting observation, Kristian, but your advice isn't very helpful without any examples or concrete ideas. What, in your opinion, is a "proper version system for schema changes"? My take on this is that schema changes are relatively few and far apart in NAV today. Therefore I don't see the need to invest a lot of time into devising some elaborate system to avoid having to manually write sql patch scripts. My suggestions is rather to implement a project policy to commit patch scripts along with any schema alterations. That way, a poor release coordinator (me) won't have to piece together every schema change that took place since the last release, and produce a whopping mishmash of hopefully consistent SQL upgrade statements on each release. Also, this should solve the problem for the few who might be using bleeding edge code from trunk at all times. They might not all be SQL wizards, able to analyze the changes and whip up their own SQL statements to change the schema, but each revision that updates the schema will come with an up-to-date upgrade script.
